Today's entrepreneurial donors properly expect that the institutions receiving their gifts will be good stewards of their money, will evaluate honestly the success of the programs they administer, and will use verifiable metrics to measure outcomes. These donors want to follow how funds are spent so they can determine whether the recipient organization is using the money wisely and in accordance with their wishes, carrying out the promised actions, and providing the specific charitable benefits and services the gift was intended to finance.
While the enumeration of outcomes can be difficult, effective nonprofit organizations expect to be held accountable and welcome regular appraisals. These are the nonprofits astute donors should encourage through their giving programs.
